Important Advisory: Microsoft SQL Server Database Visibility Changes Following Plesk Update

We would like to inform you about a recent security-related change introduced in the latest Plesk updates that may affect the visibility of Microsoft SQL Server databases when using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

What has changed?

Following the recent Plesk update, SQL Server database users are restricted from viewing the names of all databases hosted on the same shared SQL Server instance.

This security enhancement restricts the VIEW ANY DATABASE permission to prevent customers from unnecessarily viewing database names belonging to other customers hosted on the same shared server.

How does this affect you?

When connecting to your SQL Server using your existing database credentials through SSMS, you may notice that your databases are not displayed under Object Explorer.

This is a database visibility restriction and does not necessarily indicate that your databases are missing or inaccessible.

Recommended alternative SQL management tools

As this restriction specifically affects database visibility in SSMS, you can use alternative SQL management tools to connect to and manage your databases.

We recommend the following alternatives:

These tools are not affected by the database visibility restriction described in the Plesk advisory.

You can continue connecting to your databases using your existing SQL Server credentials, provided the database user has the necessary permissions.

Need assistance?

If you are unable to connect to your database or continue experiencing SQL Server connectivity issues, please contact our technical support team with the following details:

  • Domain name: The domain associated with your Plesk subscription.
  • Database username and password: The SQL Server database login you are using.

Our technical team will review the configuration and assist you accordingly.

Please note that we are retaining the database visibility restrictions on shared SQL Server infrastructure to maintain customer isolation and prevent unnecessary exposure of other customers' database names.
